Ground mount costs more than rooftop. Here is why, and by how much.

Our price is $3.50 a watt, installed. That covers the panels, the rack that holds them, the foundation it stands on, the electrical work and the labour to put it up. What it does not cover is the trench from the array to your meter, and site work: rock, slope, clearing. Those are priced separately, below.

The national average for a home ground mount is about $2.96 per watt, against about $2.60 per watt for home solar generally. That gap is not a markup. It is a steel frame that has to stand up on its own, a foundation in the ground, and a trench from the array to your panel. A roof install skips all three because the roof is already there.

So we do not quote a price per watt and hope. You get a number for your property, with the trench and the ground it actually sits on.

03 · HOW IT GETS BUILT

How a ground mount gets built.

Four steps. Two days of them have our trucks in your yard; the rest is paperwork we do while you get on with your life.

· STEP 1

Design it online

You put in your address and the tool does the rest: satellite imagery for the roofless space you actually have, a PVWatts run at your own coordinates rather than a county average, and the soil survey for your parcel. Out of that comes a system size and a price, as a range. About three minutes, and nobody calls you first.

· STEP 2

Site visit and final quote

Then somebody comes out and checks the things a satellite cannot. Where your meter is and how far the run is, because the trench is priced by the foot. What the ground actually does when you dig it. What shades the spot at four in the afternoon in December, not at noon in June. About an hour, on site.

· STEP 3

Permits, install and switch-on

Two separate queues and we stand in both. The city wants a building permit and usually an electrical permit; the utility is a separate application and it decides when the system may legally be switched on. The install itself is two days, three if we hit rock. Nothing gets energised before both clear.

Five things decide whether your land works

The design tool asks three of these before it gives you a number. Here are all five, so you can rule yourself out in thirty seconds without giving anybody an address.

  • You own it. A ground mount is a foundation in your ground and a trench across your yard. If you rent, or the land is in somebody else's name, that is a conversation with them before it is one with us.
  • About an acre, or more. Under an acre the setbacks, the shade and the run to the meter usually leave nowhere sensible to put it. Usually — not never.
  • More than a tenth of it clear. Clear means no shade trees, no structures, no steep ground. A tenth of an acre of genuinely open dirt beats five acres of post oak.
  • A spot that is not a long walk from your meter. The array has to reach your electrical panel, and that trench is priced by the foot — $45 a foot for the simplest run. No distance disqualifies you. A distance changes the number, and it is worth knowing which one you are at before you settle on a spot.
  • No HOA, or one you have read. Texas law stops an HOA banning solar outright and still lets it refuse a ground mount outside a fenced yard, or one taller than the fence. Here is what it can and cannot refuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Often, and sometimes you are required to. Texas law lets an HOA confine a ground mount to a fenced yard, and inside a fenced yard the array cannot stand taller than the fence. Some cities apply the same test at the permit counter: Celina requires screening by a fence or a six-foot evergreen hedge with nothing above the line. Where a fence line governs we bring the tilt down until the array fits under it — about fourteen degrees puts four modules below six feet. It costs a little production and it is not a dead end.
Up front, yes: it buys a steel structure, a foundation and a trench, none of which exist on a roof job. The figure most often quoted, about 41% more, is a whole-system comparison inflated by ground-mount systems being larger; per watt the same source lands nearer 14%. What you get back is the angle. Our own PVWatts runs put a south-facing array about 23% above an east-facing roof and 21% above a west-facing one — and close to nothing above a good south-facing roof, which is when we tell you to use the roof.
Ours is $3.50 a watt, installed. That covers the panels, the rack, the foundation, the electrical work and the labour — so an 8 kW system is about $28,000 and a 15 kW system about $52,500. It does not cover the trench from the array to your meter, or site work: rock adds ten percent, slope five or ten, clearing starts at $1,500. Those are the two lines that make two identical arrays cost different amounts, which is why we price them per property rather than averaging them into a headline number.
A full install takes two days, three if we hit rock. The whole job is longer than that, and most of it is waiting rather than working: a site survey, then permits and the utility's interconnection application, then the install, then switch-on once the inspections clear. The two days are the part with our trucks in your yard. The rest is paperwork we do while you get on with your life.
Inside a city, nearly always: a building permit and an electrical permit, and some cities add a plan review. There is no statewide solar permit and no standard fee — each city sets its own. Fairview publishes $175, Flower Mound $200, Celina $225 in three parts; several publish nothing at all and you find out when you apply. Outside the city limits it is usually a shorter list, but that is not the same as no rules.
Very little, and none of it on a schedule. Rain does most of the cleaning. After a hailstorm, walk it and look — which you can do standing on the ground, unlike a roof array. Beyond that there is nothing you need to book. We do not sell a maintenance plan. If something we built fails, the twenty-year workmanship warranty covers it, and the panels and inverter carry the manufacturer's own cover.
On an acre with a clear south-facing spot and a short run to the meter, usually. On a small lot with a sound south-facing roof, no — put them on the roof and keep the money. We will tell you that on the phone. The thing that moves the answer most is not the panels. It is what your utility pays for exported power: across the utilities we researched in September 2026 the best rate was 11.3 cents and the worst 5 cents. Same house, same panels, two different answers.
Cash or a loan. That is the whole list. We do not sell leases and we do not sell power purchase agreements. You own the system, the production, and whatever your utility pays for the surplus. We are not a lender and we do not have a preferred one, so we publish no rates and no names — that part is between you and your bank. The federal residential credit expired on 31 December 2025, so nothing we quote assumes one.
The manufacturer's warranty covers the panels and the inverter — the panel we fit carries twenty-five years of product and performance cover. Ours covers the workmanship for twenty years. A manufacturer's warranty does not cover the person who installed it, which is the question to ask any installer you are comparing us with.
